Waking at night
Find out what wakes you at 3am or 4am and how to sleep through again. Each guide tells you which changes come with age and which causes to get checked.
- Is waking up to pee at night normal after 40?
Waking once a night to pee is common and may fall within normal behaviour. One survey of adults reported 28.4% woke at least once and 8.9% at least three times (Zumrutbas 2016). If you wake twice or more, or this is new, keep a three-day bladder diary and take it to a doctor.
- Why do I keep waking up at 3am after 40, and what helps?
Waking at 3am is common after 40, and no single hormone explains it. Sleep gets lighter with age: each decade adds about 10 minutes awake after sleep onset (Boulos 2019, 169 studies). If you are still awake after 15 to 20 minutes, leave the bed and return when sleepy. If you snore or gasp, see a clinician.
